There are a few different ways to get turned around safely. Take one of our driving courses and make certain that you use the best one for your situation.
The easiest way to get turned around is by doing a U-Turn. During the driving exam, you will be tested on this skill in a cul de sac. In order to be safe, you must shoulder check right before entering the cul de sac and just as you begin to turn the wheel to the left, shoulder check to the left and proceed if safe to do so.
2 Pt. Turn - is your next resource if there isn't enough room to do a U-Turn, but there is a driveway. Pull safely (mirror, signal, shoulder check) over to the edge of the road just past a driveway. Watch in your mirror for a safe gap in traffic. Put the car into reverse, do a 360-degree vision check, then back into the drive way. Shift the car back into drive and now you are ready to proceed with a clear view in both directions.
3 Pt. Turn - It would be appropriate to do a 3pt. turn when it isn't possible to use either of the first two turns. When doing a 3pt. turn you will just be using the road. Pull safely (mirror, signal, shoulder check) over to the edge of the road. Check that both directions are clear, mirror, signal left, shoulder check left and slowly roll the car over to the opposite side of the road turning the wheel rapidly to the left. Put the car into reverse, do the 360-degree vision check then back the car slowly turning the steering wheel to the right. When the front end of the car is able to clear the curb, shift back into drive, check traffic, and proceed if safe.
